Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)

was developed in the 1990’s by a group of psychologists who devised a programme that brought together meditation and cognitive therapy approaches. Over the years, MBCT has been more and more widely practised and researched, and is being increasingly used within the NHS to help people with a variety of difficulties.

It is recommended as an effective, evidence-based practice by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) to prevent relapse in depression, and research studies suggest it can help people who have difficulties with low mood, anxiety and stress.

Mindfulness-based approaches have also been used in the management of physical pain, binge eating, addictions and self harm. We have found that it can particularly help those who experience intense self-criticism to develop a kinder and gentler attitude to themselves, and can therefore be useful where self esteem is an issue.
