Humanistic counselling has its intellectual roots in the Human Potential Movement, prevalent in the United States from the 1960s onwards. The humanistic paradigm emphasises the human capacity for self-determination, self-development and achieving one’s potential – that is, it looks to develop one’s strengths rather than focus on one’s weaknesses. Humanistic counselling is a holistic and client-centered approach which seeks to draw on and develop client’s resources to resolved and explore any issues that may be experienced.
